How Long Does Solar Installation Take?
Physical installation is usually only one part of the timeline. Total time from signing to operation depends mostly on paperwork and approvals, which vary by location. We don't publish a typical number of days because it varies widely by jurisdiction and utility; ask your installer for a local estimate.
Typical steps
- Site assessment and design — roof, shading, and electrical review.
- Contract and financing.
- HOA approval, if applicable (FTC, DOE).
- Permits — building and electrical permit fees should be in your bid (FTC).
- Installation.
- Inspection — DOE notes systems undergo inspection as part of installation.
- Utility interconnection / permission to operate — required before you can export power under your utility's rules.
What can slow things down
- Local permitting processes (LBNL cites permitting among factors driving cross-state price differences)
- Utility interconnection queues
- Equipment availability
- Roof repairs needed first (see our roof readiness guide)
- Battery additions
Questions for your installer
- What's your typical timeline in my city and utility?
- Who handles permits and interconnection paperwork?
- When does payment come due relative to these milestones?
